Puppy Care Guide: Give Your Puppy the Best Start in Life
Bringing a puppy home is exciting, but it comes with responsibilities. At Vetcare Pet Hospital, Manikonda, we’re here to guide you every step of the way. With advice from Dr. Vishwanath, a trusted pet care specialist, your puppy will grow healthy, happy, and well-socialized.
Up to 8 Weeks – Before Bringing Your Puppy Home
Whether from a breeder or rescue, the previous owner should:
Begin basic toilet training
Provide initial puppy vaccinations
Start early socialization
Before your puppy arrives:
Prepare a cozy, draft-free sleeping space with a crate or soft bed
Bring a familiar blanket from their first home for comfort
Puppy-proof your space by removing dangerous objects or chewables
Provide safe toys and a designated play area
8–12 Weeks – Welcoming Your Puppy Home
This is a critical phase for learning and socialization.
Continue safe exposure to:
Healthy, vaccinated dogs and friendly cats
New sounds, people, and outdoor sights (by carrying them)
Gentle grooming, car rides, and regular handling
Establish good habits:
Stick to the same food and meal schedule they’re used to
Reinforce toilet training by rewarding outdoor potty success
Start crate training and leave them alone briefly to avoid separation anxiety
Reward positive behavior and gently ignore bad habits
12 Weeks Onwards – Training & Confidence Building
Once fully vaccinated, your puppy can explore the world outside.
Ask your vet about flea treatments, worming, and neutering
Join certified puppy training classes near you
Use your puppy’s favorite toy or treat as motivation during training
Keep sessions short and fun—puppies get tired easily
Continue using the crate as a safe, calming retreat
